What is a DCU, and What Does it Do?

A DCU, or display control unit, is an essential component of many modern vehicles. It’s responsible for ensuring that electrical systems ranging from infotainment systems to air conditioners are working properly. If you’ve ever experienced a faulty display in your car, it’s more than likely that a DCU malfunction is behind your problems.

Sadly, not many car owners are even aware that DCUs exist in the first place. This should come as no surprise because car manufacturers like Nissan, deliberately or otherwise, are tight-lipped on the very existence of DCUs. Because of this, many car owners who run into electrical issues with their cars often have no recourse except to send their vehicles back to the manufacturer for repairs or replacements. In these scenarios, getting a faulty DCU replaced can cost thousands of dollars

In this article, it’s my aim to demystify the world of DCUs and explain just why they’re so important to many modern vehicles. Moreover, I’ll also take you through some things you can do when you run into DCU problems. Keep reading to learn more about what a DCU is and why it’s crucial to keep yours in good working condition.

What Parts of Your Car Does a DCU Control?

To grasp the importance of a DCU, it’s important to know which parts of a car it controls. While this information will differ depending on your model of car, here’s a rough list of vehicle components that can be dependent on a functioning DCU:

  • Infotainment systems
  • Backup camera
  • Alert systems
  • Climate control
  • Navigation systems
  • Steering wheel controls
  • Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto
  • …and other key electronic components

As a whole, a DCU is responsible for managing how all these components interact with the driver and how they process and display information. When diagnosing an issue with one of these electrical systems, checking your DCU should always be your first port of call.

How do I diagnose a faulty DCU?

The easiest way to tell that you’re experiencing a DCU issue is if your infotainment system dies. Other components, like your backup camera, won’t necessarily fail even if your DCU stops working, so they’re not the best indicators of a DCU problem on their own.

A broken or malfunctioning infotainment system, though, is more often than not a sign that your DCU isn’t working properly. Some telltale signs to look out for include the center screen failing to show at all, going in a loop or only displaying the logo of your car’s manufacturer. Why should I repair my faulty DCU?

As I’ve already discussed, a faulty DCU can lead to numerous problems with the electronics of your car, especially your infotainment system. Quickly repairing your DCU ensures that you can regain full access to your infotainment system and that you’re able to access features like touch-screen, climate control, on-screen GPS navigation, and more.

Moreover, keeping your DCU in working order is simply a part of regular car maintenance, which has innumerable benefits. For one thing, maintaining your car allows you full access to its features, which gives you a better driving experience and may even keep you safe on the road. What’s more, failing to maintain key components like your DCU can lead to long-term electrical damage to your vehicle, quickly tanking its resale potential. To maximise your car’s value in the long term, make sure that all its mechanical and electrical components receive regular repairs.

How do I go about repairing my DCU?

Now that you know the importance of a DCU, you’ll naturally want to know what to do when yours starts malfunctioning. As I mentioned in the intro, one option is to send your car back to its manufacturer. When you do this, though, the manufacturer will more often than not perform a full DCU replacement, whether or not it’s necessary.

As you might expect, this can set you back a few thousand dollars; I’ve seen quotes as high as $5000-$9000. This is why the right to repair movement is so important: as a consumer, you deserve full transparency on every part of your vehicle, as well as complete information on how to fix it most cost-effectively.

The lack of information from manufacturers also means that most independent repair shops don’t have access to the specific tools and/or replacement parts required to fix your DCU. Worse, many repair shops aren’t even aware that DCUs exist; or can be repaired, in the first place. Even if they are, they’ll often source repair kits from the same places that you would if you were to make the repairs yourself.

The most cost-effective choice if you’re looking to fix your DCU without breaking the bank is to cut out the middleman and follow the DIY approach. To do so, you first need to purchase a DCU repair kit from a retailer like DCUFix. A repair kit will include an SD card that’s specifically pre-programmed for your vehicle. So if, for instance, you’re running into DCU problems with a Nissan Infiniti QX60, you should only buy a repair kit that’s tailor-made for that model. When you purchase a DCU repair kit from DCUFix, you’ll also get a full set of plastic tools that will allow you to detach and re-attach your DCU while you’re performing repairs.
